India’s rooftop solar sector is set to receive a significant boost following a new collaboration between Deakin University and the Smart Energy Council, aimed at developing a skilled workforce to support the country’s growing clean energy ambitions.
The two organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly design and implement training programs tailored to India’s rooftop solar segment. The initiative seeks to address one of the key challenges in the sector—limited availability of industry-ready technicians and professionals.
Under the agreement, the partners will focus on creating globally aligned training frameworks, developing curriculum standards, and introducing train-the-trainer programs to ensure scalability. Pilot skilling initiatives are also expected to be rolled out as part of the collaboration.
The partnership will combine Australia’s expertise in vocational education and training with India’s expanding renewable energy market, particularly in the decentralized solar segment. Rooftop solar installations, which require specialized installation and maintenance skills, are expected to benefit significantly from structured workforce development.
The initiative is supported by broader India–Australia clean energy cooperation efforts and reflects growing international collaboration in advancing renewable energy ecosystems.
Industry stakeholders note that while India has made substantial progress in solar capacity addition, workforce readiness remains a critical factor in sustaining long-term growth, especially in the rooftop segment.
The collaboration is expected to contribute to building a robust talent pipeline, supporting job creation, and strengthening the overall implementation capacity of India’s rooftop solar sector.
