Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna public sector undertaking, has informed about a key regulatory development involving one of its subsidiaries. In a communication dated April 20, 2026, the company stated that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has begun the process to strike off the name of CIL Solar PV Limited from the official register of companies. The subsidiary is a wholly owned entity of CIL.
The action follows a public notice issued by the Registrar of Companies under Section 248(2) of the Companies Act, 2013. This provision allows for the removal of a companyโs name from the register, usually when the company itself applies for closure or when it has not carried out any significant business activity for a certain period. The initiation of this process indicates that CIL Solar PV Limited may no longer be operational or strategically relevant.
According to the official communication signed by B.P. Dubey, Executive Director and Compliance Officer of CIL, the Registrar of Companies has formally proposed the removal. As part of the process, the government has ensured a transparent mechanism for any objections. Individuals or entities that may have concerns regarding the striking off of the company are allowed to submit their objections to the MCA within thirty days from the date of the public notice. This window is intended to address any pending legal or financial claims before the company is dissolved.
CIL Solar PV Limited was initially established as part of Coal Indiaโs broader plan to diversify into renewable energy, particularly solar power. The move was aligned with the companyโs long-term vision to expand beyond its core coal business and participate in Indiaโs growing clean energy sector.
However, the decision to initiate the striking off process suggests a possible strategic realignment or consolidation of CILโs renewable energy initiatives. At present, the parent company has shared this update as part of its regulatory disclosures and to maintain transparency with stakeholders. The final outcome will depend on whether any valid objections are received during the stipulated period.
