Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited Enters PV Ingot And Wafer Manufacturing With ₹6,500 Crore Investment

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has announced its entry into a new business segment with plans to manufacture photovoltaic (PV) ingots and wafers. The decision was approved by the company’s board on April 30, 2026, and marks an important step toward strengthening its role in India’s solar energy sector.

The move focuses on the upstream part of the solar value chain. Ingots and wafers are key raw materials used in the production of solar cells and modules. At present, India depends heavily on imports for these components, with a large share coming from China. By starting domestic production, the company aims to reduce this dependency and support the country’s push for self-reliance in renewable energy manufacturing. The initiative also aligns with upcoming regulatory frameworks such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List III.

To implement the project, the company has planned a major investment of around ₹6,500 crore. The proposed manufacturing facility will have a total capacity of up to 10 GW. The development will be carried out in two phases, with each phase adding 5 GW capacity. This phased approach is expected to help in managing resources and scaling operations efficiently.

The company believes that entering this segment at an early stage will provide a competitive advantage, as domestic manufacturing capacity for these components is still limited. By expanding into upstream production, it expects better control over its supply chain, improved margins, and stronger support for its existing solar business.

The project is also expected to contribute to India’s broader renewable energy goals by boosting local manufacturing and enhancing energy security. It reflects a growing trend among Indian companies to integrate across the solar value chain and reduce exposure to global supply disruptions.
