South Africa Set For Record Renewable Energy And Battery Storage Growth In 2026

South Africa is moving toward a major shift in its energy sector, with 2026 expected to become a record year for renewable energy and battery storage deployment. The country, which has long depended on coal-fired power, is now steadily transitioning toward a cleaner and more diversified energy mix. This change comes after years of power shortages and frequent load-shedding that affected both households and businesses.

The growth in renewable energy is being supported by strong government programs as well as rising private sector investment. Regulatory changes have allowed private companies to generate their own electricity, which has unlocked a large number of projects. Many of these projects are now being built or are close to becoming operational, creating momentum across the sector.

Solar and wind power are leading this transition. Large solar parks in the Northern Cape and wind projects in the Eastern and Western Cape are being added to the grid at a fast pace. These projects are helping reduce the countryโ€™s dependence on coal while increasing the share of clean energy in the system.

The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme has also gained pace again, attracting large investments. This program provides a clear structure for companies to participate in energy projects, bringing in billions of rand into the sector. It is also creating thousands of jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance, especially in rural areas where industrial activity was previously limited.

However, challenges remain. Experts highlight that the expansion of the transmission grid is critical. While new energy is being generated quickly, the infrastructure needed to transport electricity to major demand centers like Gauteng is still limited. Without upgrading these power lines, the full benefits of renewable energy cannot be realized.
