Zambia has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy development with the successful grid connection of the 120 MW Mumbwa solar power plant. The project, operated by SUMEC Energy, is designed to strengthen the country’s electricity supply by adding large-scale solar power to the national grid. An initial capacity of 70 MW is already operational and supplying clean electricity, while the remaining capacity is expected to become available in the coming phase.
The Mumbwa solar project includes solar photovoltaic arrays, energy storage systems and supporting transmission infrastructure. These facilities are designed to support efficient power generation and ensure that electricity can be delivered to the national network. The combination of solar generation and energy storage is expected to improve the reliability of renewable power supply and contribute to better grid performance.
The project comes at an important time for Zambia, which has experienced significant electricity supply challenges due to prolonged droughts. The country depends heavily on hydropower for electricity generation, making its power system vulnerable to changes in rainfall and water availability. Reduced water levels in reservoirs have affected hydropower generation, creating pressure on electricity supplies for households, businesses and industries.
The addition of utility-scale solar capacity is expected to help address these challenges by diversifying Zambia’s energy mix. Solar power provides an alternative source of electricity that can reduce dependence on hydropower resources, particularly during periods of low rainfall. The integration of energy storage systems can further support electricity management and improve the flexibility of the power network.
The successful connection of the Mumbwa facility also reflects the growing role of private sector investment and renewable energy development in Zambia. Government authorities and energy companies are increasingly focusing on solar power projects to address electricity shortages, improve energy security and support economic activities.
Once the remaining 50 MW becomes operational, the project will reach its full planned capacity of 120 MW, further increasing its contribution to the national electricity supply. The additional generation is expected to support electricity access for households, commercial establishments and industrial consumers.
The Mumbwa solar power plant represents an important step in Zambia’s efforts to build a more diversified and resilient electricity system. It also highlights the growing importance of solar energy and energy storage in addressing power supply challenges and supporting the country’s long-term renewable energy ambitions.
