Narendra Modi has called for accelerating the adoption of solar-powered irrigation systems and electric vehicles (EVs) as part of India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen resilience against global energy disruptions.
Addressing concerns arising from ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and volatility in international energy markets, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to expand clean energy solutions across key sectors, particularly agriculture and transportation.
Highlighting the role of solar irrigation in transforming the rural economy, Modi said the shift toward solar-powered agricultural systems can help reduce diesel consumption, lower operational costs for farmers, and improve long-term energy security in the agricultural sector.
The Prime Minister stressed that increasing the use of solar irrigation pumps would support India’s efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuel while promoting sustainable farming practices and decentralized renewable energy generation.
India has been actively promoting solar irrigation through various government initiatives, including the PM-KUSUM scheme, aimed at expanding the deployment of solar-powered pumps and enhancing renewable energy adoption in rural areas.
Alongside solar irrigation, Modi also reiterated the importance of strengthening electric mobility and public transportation systems to reduce crude oil dependency and shield the economy from fluctuations in global fuel prices.
The remarks come at a time when geopolitical tensions and supply chain uncertainties are impacting international energy markets, prompting countries to accelerate investments in renewable energy and domestic energy security measures.
Industry observers believe the government’s continued emphasis on solar irrigation and electrification could further boost investments in solar infrastructure, decentralized renewable energy systems, rural energy solutions, and India’s broader clean energy ecosystem.
The push is also expected to create long-term opportunities for solar EPC companies, pump manufacturers, renewable energy developers, battery storage providers, and grid infrastructure firms as India advances its transition toward a cleaner and more self-reliant energy economy.
