AdventEnergy, the retail electricity supply arm of Aboitiz Power Corporation, has signed a retail electricity supply contract for 896 kilowatts with Viking Cold Storage Inc. This new partnership reflects AdventEnergy’s growing presence in Mindanao’s expanding cold chain industry.Viking Cold Storage operates a one-hectare cold storage complex in Bunawan, Davao City.
The facility includes multiple loading docks, freezer and chiller rooms, and an ethylene glycol refrigeration system that runs through a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) setup for precise monitoring and control. It also houses two blast freezers, each capable of handling 10 metric tons, ensuring products remain at the right temperature throughout storage.
Strategically located near Davao City’s airport, seaport, and commercial areas, the facility provides convenient access for businesses that rely on temperature-controlled storage to maintain the quality and shelf life of their goods. The agreement supports AdventEnergy’s ongoing expansion in Mindanao, especially following the rollout of the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program in the region in 2024.
Under RCOA, eligible electricity users such as Viking Cold Storage can select their preferred power supplier and directly negotiate supply contracts, giving them more flexibility and competitive options.AdventEnergy Vice President for Retail Energy Sales and Services Catherine Del Villar-Pasilaban noted the vital role cold storage plays in food supply systems.
She explained that facilities like Viking Cold Storage are part of a larger network that keeps food safe and accessible. Reliable electricity, she emphasized, is essential for the cold chain industry because even brief interruptions can affect food safety and product integrity.Government support for cold chain development has also grown in recent years.
In 2024, the Department of Agriculture allocated P3 billion to build 99 additional cold storage facilities by 2025 to reduce postharvest losses and strengthen food security.Viking Cold Storage President Jimmy Ngo shared that the company aims to set a benchmark for cold storage standards in the Philippines.
Through participation in the retail electricity market, he said, the facility gains access to dependable and competitive power—an important factor in maintaining the high quality of service expected by their clients. This new partnership adds to AdventEnergy’s portfolio of serviced cold chain facilities.
