Ameren Missouri has brought a new substation online to improve reliability and increase electric system capacity in Cape Girardeau County. The facility, located near the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course, will supply power to about 3,400 customers in north Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
The upgraded substation features modern equipment designed to automatically limit outages and speed up restoration, and it forms part of Ameren Missouri’s broader Smart Energy Plan, which focuses on modernizing aging infrastructure across the state.
Russ Burger, director of Ameren Missouri’s southeast Missouri division, said the energization of the new equipment represents a meaningful improvement for the local grid and demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to maintaining dependable service. The project enhances reliability by nearly doubling the capacity of the previous facility, updating key components that were more than 50 years old, and relocating the substation outside the floodplain to reduce the risk of flood-related damage.
In addition, the use of smart technology allows the system to detect issues more quickly and support automatic restoration during outages. Surrounding line improvements, including the installation of composite poles, further strengthen the grid against severe weather. The project also supported Missouri-based businesses, with major components supplied by WEG Transformers USA and nVent.
Across the state, Ameren Missouri continues to advance its Smart Energy Plan by upgrading substations, reinforcing infrastructure against storms, and deploying smart grid technologies designed to prevent outages and reduce restoration times. More than 140 substations have already been modernized under this program, marking steady progress toward a more resilient and efficient electric system for customers.
