Independent power producer BNZ has officially inaugurated the 28.4-MWp Muro solar photovoltaic (PV) park in northern Portugal, strengthening its renewable energy footprint in the country and advancing its broader clean energy investment strategy across Southern Europe.
Located in the municipality of Trofa, in the Porto district, the Muro solar facility is expected to generate approximately 43.7 GWh of clean electricity annually, contributing to Portugal’s renewable energy targets while supporting regional decarbonization efforts.
The project was developed as part of BNZ’s ongoing expansion in Portugal, a market the company has identified as a strategic priority for its renewable energy investments. Construction of the solar park was carried out by Portuguese engineering company Proef.
The commissioning marks BNZ’s second operational solar asset in Portugal, following the completion of its 49-MWp Famalicรฃo (Gemunde) solar project. Together, the projects form part of the company’s broader development plan, which includes nine photovoltaic plants across the country backed by investments of up to EUR 600 million.
According to BNZ, the Muro solar park will help reduce carbon emissions while increasing the share of renewable electricity in Portugal’s energy mix. The company continues to expand its presence across Southern Europe, where it manages a renewable energy portfolio exceeding 2.7 GW spanning solar, wind and energy storage projects in Spain, Portugal and Italy.
In addition to its solar expansion plans, BNZ is advancing a battery energy storage strategy, targeting the integration of approximately 100 MW of storage capacity into its renewable energy portfolio. The initiative is aimed at enhancing grid stability and improving the management of intermittent renewable generation.
The inauguration of the Muro solar park underscores BNZ’s commitment to supporting the energy transition in Portugal and strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure as demand for clean power continues to grow.
