Serentica Renewables, the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group, has commissioned Phase 1 of its 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking its entry into utility-scale energy storage for the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector.
The first phase comprises a 200 MWh BESS, designed to store surplus renewable energy generated during the day and discharge it during peak demand periods, enabling the supply of renewable electricity during nighttime. The company said the project features a modular architecture that provides operational flexibility, scalability, and rapid response capabilities while enhancing grid stability and facilitating greater renewable energy integration.
According to Serentica Renewables, the Bikaner project supports one of the world’s first time-block Round-the-Clock (RTC) renewable power arrangements for industrial consumers. The project demonstrates how battery energy storage can convert intermittent renewable generation into reliable 24×7 clean power, enabling industries to decarbonize without compromising operational reliability.
Akshay Hiranandani, Chief Executive Officer of Serentica Renewables, said battery energy storage systems will play a critical role in India’s next phase of clean energy transition by ensuring renewable power is available whenever required. He added that the commissioning of the first phase of the 1 GWh BESS strengthens the company’s ability to deliver reliable, round-the-clock renewable energy through the integration of advanced storage technologies with renewable generation.
The Bikaner project marks the first phase of Serentica’s broader energy storage expansion strategy. The company said it plans to build a 7 GWh battery storage pipeline over the next two years, with the aim of establishing one of India’s largest battery energy storage portfolios for the commercial and industrial segment while expanding the availability of reliable and dispatchable clean energy solutions.
