The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has invited suggestions and comments from stakeholders and the general public on Draft Amendment-II to the Manual on Transmission Planning Criteria, 2023. The move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s power transmission network and update planning standards in line with future grid requirements.

The original transmission planning manual came into effect on April 1, 2023, while Amendment I was introduced on January 8, 2025, to include additional power system planning procedures. According to the latest notification issued on May 19, 2026, the authority now plans to make several important technical revisions to accommodate new transmission technologies, revise conductor parameters, and include updated seasonal demand and renewable energy generation factors.

One of the biggest changes proposed in the draft amendment is the inclusion of 1150 kV ultra-high-voltage AC transmission systems into India’s transmission planning framework. The amendment introduces detailed operational and safety criteria specifically designed for the 1150 kV network. Under normal operating conditions, the voltage level for the system must remain within a maximum limit of 1200 kV and a minimum limit of 1090 kV.

The draft also proposes stronger reliability norms for critical infrastructure facilities such as metro rail systems, airports, railways, hospitals, data centers, refineries, and steel plants. These facilities will be required to maintain 100% redundancy in their grid connections and, wherever possible, receive electricity supply from two independent power sources to ensure uninterrupted operations.

The revised planning criteria further focus on improving grid stability and system security during contingencies and faults. Under the updated N-1 contingency criteria, the transmission system must continue operating safely within thermal limits even if a single 1150 kV transmission circuit suddenly goes out of service. In addition, the draft specifies that the grid should remain stable during permanent three-phase-to-ground faults occurring close to an 1150 kV bus, provided the fault is cleared within 100 milliseconds.

The amendment also revises transformation capacity standards for substations operating at the 1150 kV level. The maximum transformation capacity for load-serving and generation pooling substations has been proposed at 12,600 MVA. To support voltage regulation at ultra-high-voltage levels, the draft introduces standard bus reactor sizes of 220 MVAr and 300 MVAr.

In addition to transmission system changes, the annexures of the manual have been updated with revised seasonal load factors covering summer, winter, and monsoon periods. The draft also includes updated renewable energy capacity factors for solar and wind power projects to reflect evolving generation patterns in the country.

The CEA has requested all stakeholders to submit their feedback and suggestions by June 8, 2026. Comments can be sent electronically to the Chief Engineer of the Power System Planning & Appraisal Division-II.

Explained – Heatwaves Vs. Solar Efficiency: Understanding The Impact Of Peak Summer Temperatures On Solar PV Plant Performance

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense across many parts of the world, especially in regions with large-scale solar installations. While solar photovoltaic (PV) plants depend on sunlight to generate electricity, extremely high summer temperatures can negatively affect their performance. Many people assume that hotter weather always means better solar power generation, but in reality, excessive heat can reduce the efficiency of solar PV modules and impact overall plant output.

Solar PV modules work by converting sunlight into electricity through semiconductor materials, mainly silicon. These modules perform best under standard test conditions, usually around 25°C cell temperature. During peak summer, especially in heatwave conditions, the temperature of solar panels can rise above 60°C or even 70°C. As the temperature increases, the electrical efficiency of the PV cells starts decreasing. This happens because high heat increases the internal resistance of the semiconductor material, reducing the voltage generated by the module.

Most solar modules have a temperature coefficient, which indicates how much efficiency is lost for every degree rise above 25°C. On average, crystalline silicon solar panels lose around 0.3% to 0.5% efficiency per degree Celsius increase. For example, if the panel temperature rises by 20°C above the standard condition, the power output may drop by nearly 6% to 10%. This loss becomes significant for utility-scale solar plants operating in extremely hot regions.

Heatwaves also create additional challenges for solar PV plant operations. Inverters, transformers, and other electrical components can overheat during extreme summer conditions. High temperatures may lead to thermal stress, reduced equipment lifespan, and unexpected shutdowns. Dust accumulation during dry summer months further reduces solar radiation absorption, lowering power generation. In some desert and semi-arid regions, hot winds combined with dust storms can create severe operational issues for solar plants.

Another important factor is the impact of heat on energy demand. During summer, electricity consumption increases sharply due to air conditioning and cooling systems. Although solar generation is usually high during sunny days, efficiency losses caused by heatwaves may reduce the expected power supply during peak demand hours. This creates challenges for grid operators and power utilities in maintaining grid stability.

To reduce the impact of high temperatures, solar plant developers are adopting several technical solutions. Advanced solar modules with lower temperature coefficients are becoming increasingly popular. Technologies such as TOPCon, HJT, and bifacial modules generally perform better under high-temperature conditions compared to conventional modules. Proper ventilation and mounting structures also help in cooling solar panels naturally by improving airflow beneath the modules.

Regular cleaning and maintenance are equally important during summer months. Removing dust and dirt improves sunlight absorption and prevents hotspots on the panels. Some large solar plants are also using robotic cleaning systems and weather monitoring technologies to maintain efficiency during harsh climatic conditions.

In addition, integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS) with solar PV plants can help manage fluctuations caused by heat-related efficiency losses. Energy storage allows excess daytime electricity to be stored and supplied during peak evening demand periods.

As climate change continues to intensify heatwaves globally, understanding the relationship between temperature and solar PV performance is becoming increasingly important. Improving module technology, adopting better cooling and maintenance practices, and integrating energy storage solutions will play a crucial role in ensuring reliable and efficient solar power generation during extreme summer conditions.

Egypt is preparing to launch a major green energy initiative called the “Industry Sun” program to expand rooftop solar power across the country’s industrial sector. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the project before it is officially presented to the Cabinet for final approval. The initiative is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to increase clean energy use, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, and ease pressure on the national electricity grid and natural gas resources.

The program aims to generate nearly 1,000 megawatts of solar power by installing rooftop solar systems on factories across Egypt. According to Industry Minister Khaled Hashem, the project will require around 7 million square meters of rooftop space and is expected to involve nearly 7,000 factories. This represents almost 10 percent of Egypt’s registered industrial base. Officials stated that the average solar installation for participating factories will be around 150 kilowatts, although system sizes will vary depending on the size of the factory and its electricity consumption needs.

Large industrial facilities with extensive rooftop space and high daytime energy use are expected to install bigger solar systems, while smaller factories and medium-scale industries will receive customized installations suited to their operations. The government believes the initiative will especially support small and medium-sized enterprises by lowering electricity costs and reducing operational expenses during peak daytime hours.

The Industry Sun program is also expected to improve the competitiveness of Egyptian products in international markets. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean manufacturing practices, the initiative will help Egyptian exporters meet growing global sustainability standards. Officials believe this step will strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional center for green transition and environmentally friendly industrial supply chains.

During the meeting, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat highlighted the significant economic and environmental benefits expected from the project, particularly in reducing conventional fuel consumption. Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk confirmed that the government has already finalized the initial financial estimates and is coordinating with funding institutions to support the rapid implementation of the initiative.

South African Businesses Face Major Insurance Risks Amid Rapid Solar Expansion

0
Representational image. Credit: Canva

The growing adoption of solar energy systems across South Africa is creating new insurance challenges for businesses, according to a recent industry analysis published by Business Day. As companies continue investing in private solar infrastructure to reduce dependence on load-shedding and rising electricity costs, many are failing to update their insurance policies to include these expensive new assets.

Industry experts have warned that many businesses remain underinsured because they do not inform their insurers or brokers after installing solar systems. Solar panels, inverters, and battery storage systems involve significant investment costs, but many commercial property policies still reflect the older value of the building before the renewable energy systems were added. This creates a major financial risk in the event of fires, storms, or other forms of damage, as the insurance payout may not fully cover replacement costs.

Experts also highlighted that standard commercial insurance policies often do not provide automatic protection against risks associated with solar installations. Renewable energy systems are exposed to several unique threats, including hailstorms, lightning strikes, theft of copper cables, and accidental damage during maintenance work. In some cases, insurers may even reject claims if the solar systems were not installed by certified professionals or if the installation failed to comply with local electrical and building regulations.

Another major concern involves business interruption risks. Many companies now rely heavily on solar systems to continue operations during power outages and grid instability. If these systems become damaged, production and business activities could stop completely. Without proper business interruption cover that specifically includes renewable energy assets, businesses may struggle to recover financial losses caused by downtime. Delays in obtaining imported replacement parts could further extend operational disruptions and increase revenue losses.

Insurance specialists are now urging South African businesses to immediately review and update their insurance policies after integrating solar infrastructure. Experts recommend conducting detailed asset revaluations and working closely with specialized insurance brokers to ensure complete coverage for physical damage, environmental risks, compliance requirements, and revenue losses linked to renewable energy systems.

Further insight was provided by Ismael Guerrero, CEO of the company’s subsidiary Recurrent Energy, who noted that the sequential improvement in revenue came largely from the sale of the Fort Duncan project. Margin performance also improved due to the absence of pipeline impairment charges that had affected earlier quarters.

He cautioned that although continued asset monetization may weigh on near-term financial results, it remains an essential strategy for reducing leverage and recycling capital to support long-term growth. Canadian Solar’s CFO, Xinbo Zhu, added that the company closed the quarter with $1.1 billion in revenue and a strengthened gross margin of 25.1 percent, supported by a $93 million tariff refund.

Net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed to $32 million due to stronger margins and controlled operating expenses. The company ended the quarter with a robust cash position of $1.9 billion, despite a net operating cash outflow of $209 million driven by increases in inventory. Canadian Solar also provided detailed reporting on its manufacturing and development segments.

In Q1 2026, the company recognized revenues on 2.5 GW of solar module shipments, reflecting a significant year-over-year decline due to lower sales volumes globally. However, the 2.1 GWh of energy storage shipments represented substantial growth compared to the prior year. Operating expenses rose slightly to $198 million, though they remained proportionate to revenue.

Total debt increased to $6.8 billion, mainly due to the issuance of convertible notes, with $2.3 billion classified as non-recourse debt under Recurrent Energy.Operationally, the company continued advancing its strategic shift toward high-value markets, especially within the United States. Its 5 GWp module factory in Mesquite, Texas, remains on track for expansion to 10 GWp by late 2026.

At the same time, construction and commissioning progress continued at the Indiana HJT solar cell factory. Phase I of the project began trial production in April 2026 with a capacity of 2.1 GWp, and is expected to become one of the first commercial-scale HJT facilities in the U.S. Phase II is scheduled to begin trial production in early 2027, adding another 4.2 GWp of capacity.

Together, these investments reinforce the company’s goal of strengthening the American solar supply chain and supporting domestic manufacturing growth.Canadian Solar’s updated structure, following the December 2025 realignment of its U.S. operations, now comprises two principal segments.

The Manufacturing segment includes CS PowerTech—a majority-controlled joint venture that oversees U.S. manufacturing and sales of solar modules, solar cells, and advanced energy storage products—and CSI Solar, which covers manufacturing for global markets outside the United States. The second segment, Recurrent Energy, focuses on the development and sale of solar and battery storage projects, as well as long-term electricity generation through its operating portfolio.
