According to reports, Iraq accepts the proposal for the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 750 MW in the Southern Muthanna Governorate to meet growing domestic demand.
Adel Karim stated that smaller power substations will also be constructed in the governorate in order to provide sufficient electricity supply for Summers.
“We have decided to support Muthanna Governorate with a new solar power station with a capacity of 750 MW to tackle supply shortages,” the Minister said, quoted by Aliqtisad News and other Iraqi publications.
Karim stated that the project was part of a plan for increasing reliance on renewable energy, and to reduce electricity imports, mostly from Iran.
Total of France and other companies have been awarded contracts in Iraq for building solar power plants. Officials also stated that more projects would be awarded this fiscal year.
