JOGMEC And PERTAMINA Signs MoU For Energy Transition

Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and PT Pertamina (Persero) (PERTAMINA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote discussion to create future business opportunities in contributing to energy transition and security in Indonesia and Japan. Based on this MOU, both parties will commence discussion to formulate and promote projects related to CO2-EOR/EGR, hydrogen and ammonia production with CCS, and industrial CCS, including Japanese companies.

The signing ceremony of the MOU was held in Sapporo, Japan witnessed by H.E. Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources in Indonesia, and H.E. NISHIMURA Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan, taking the occasion of the G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment.

JOGMEC and PERTAMINA together with PT Pertamina EP, a subsidiary of PERTAMINA, have collaborated in a joint study on CO2 injection at the Jatibarang Field in West Jawa, Indonesia since August 2022. The parties have successfully implemented CO2 Huff and Puff to demonstrate and verify the effect of CO2-EOR and CO2 underground storage for a depleted oil and gas field.

In Indonesia, several Japanese companies are conducting upstream development projects related to oil and natural gas. In addition, Indonesia has a high potential for CO2 underground storage, as well as clean fuel production such as hydrogen and ammonia. JOGMEC will strengthen its cooperative relationship with PERTAMINA through this MOU to create business opportunities in contributing to the energy transition and energy security in Indonesia and Japan.

We will contribute to the improvement of Japan’s energy security and the realization of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Indonesia and other Asian countries.
