The Kingdom of Bahrain has taken a significant step towards adopting clean and sustainable energy solutions with the commissioning of its second-largest solar power project. Located at Dragon City, this initiative underscores Bahrain’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing sustainable practices for the next 25 years.
Led by Vitol Bahrain, the project’s completion within 18 months reflects concerted efforts to strengthen Bahrain’s renewable energy infrastructure. Kieran Gallagher, Managing Director of Vitol Bahrain, highlighted the company’s longstanding presence in Bahrain over four decades and its ongoing commitment to carbon emission reduction. Gallagher emphasized Vitol’s active participation in tendering processes for additional projects across Bahrain and the broader region, demonstrating a proactive approach to sustainable energy initiatives.
The commencement event, graced by the presence of Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Bin Daina, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, highlights the backing of the government for renewable energy initiatives. Dr Bin Daina commended the collaborative efforts of Vitol Bahrain and its partners, acknowledging the significant role of such initiatives in advancing Bahrain’s sustainability goals.
The solar plant at Dragon City, with a capacity of 5.7 MW, is the largest solar carport plant in Bahrain and ranks as the second-largest solar project in the Kingdom. Over the next 25 years, it is expected to generate 9,000,000 kWh of clean renewable energy annually, substantially reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.
Eng. Ahmed Ali Alammadi, CEO of Diyar Al Muharraq and a board member of Dragon City, emphasized the project’s alignment with the company’s commitment to fostering environmentally conscious practices.
The collaboration between Vitol Bahrain, Diyar Al Muharraq, and Dragon City demonstrates the efficacy of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development initiatives. Kieran Gallagher expressed optimism for future collaborations aimed at advancing Bahrain’s energy landscape and promoting environmental stewardship.
