Hydro Rein, Atlas Renewable Energy, and Albras Partner to Launch Boa Sorte Solar Plant: A Beacon of Sustainable Energy in Brazil

In a joint effort between leading renewable energy solutions providers Hydro Rein and Atlas Renewable Energy, along with Albras, a collaborative venture between Hydro and Nippon Amazon Aluminium Co. Ltd. (NAAC), the Boa Sorte solar plant emerges as a beacon of sustainable energy production in Brazil. With an impressive installed capacity of 438 MW, the facility is poised to generate approximately 920 GWh annually, catering to the energy needs of over 394,000 Brazilian households.

Marcela Jacob, Head of Hydro Rein in Brazil, expressed pride in the project’s milestone, emphasizing its pivotal role in Hydro’s decarbonization journey in Brazil. “Hydro Rein’s mission is to develop renewable energy solutions for more sustainable industries. This is what we’re doing with Boa Sorte,” Jacob stated.

Boa Sorte represents the second major solar endeavor undertaken by Hydro Rein in Brazil, following the successful commencement of operations at the Mendubim solar plant in Rio Grande do Norte earlier this year, in collaboration with partners Scatec and Equinor.

Executives at Albras, Brazil’s largest primary aluminum producer, hailed the project as a significant stride towards greener aluminum production. João Batista Menezes, CEO of Albras, affirmed the plant’s critical role in securing the company’s long-term energy strategy, fostering sustainability, and contributing to the green transition.

The development of Boa Sorte adhered meticulously to ambitious sustainability standards, including the International Finance Corporation Performance Standards (IFC PS) and Equator Principles, underscoring Hydro Rein’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Fabi Bortoluzo, Country Manager for Atlas Renewable Energy in Brazil, underscored the project’s significance, highlighting its role in forging partnerships and securing clean energy agreements. He emphasized Boa Sorte’s distinction as the first solar project in Brazil to secure a dollar-indexed loan from BNDES, Brazil’s development bank.

Boa Sorte stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of industry leaders in driving forward Brazil’s renewable energy agenda. As the plant gears up to supply renewable energy to Albras under a 20-year power purchase agreement, it signals a promising shift towards sustainable energy practices in the nation’s industrial landscape.
