The citizen energy cooperative Egis has officially inaugurated the district heating system in Bundorf, located in the Bavarian district of Haßberge. The system, which went into operation, is part of a larger initiative that includes a photovoltaic power plant with 125 megawatts and electric car charging stations already in place.
Comprising a heating center equipped with two large air heat pumps, a biomass boiler, a hot water storage tank, and a 1,600-meter-long district heating pipeline network, the new district heating supply has been under construction alongside the solar park since last year. Egis, in collaboration with Maxsolar, brought the photovoltaic power plant online in September, while the district heating system has been in trial operation since the end of 2023 and is now fully operational following the integration of the air heat pumps.
Solar power generated by the photovoltaic power plant is transmitted to the heating center in Bundorf via a direct power line, contributing to the heating of water by the large heat pumps for the district’s heat supply. This sustainable heating solution serves 20 private households and several public properties, including the town hall, community center, and kindergarten.
To ensure uninterrupted district heating supply irrespective of sunlight availability, Egis utilizes both air heat pumps and wood chips in the biomass boiler. This integrated approach represents one of the largest projects in Germany to date that connects photovoltaics to the heating and transportation sectors.
