India’s Solar Leap: Reliance to Launch First Giga-Factory for Green Energy

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd, revealed that the company will inaugurate its first solar giga-factory later this year. This ambitious project marks a pivotal shift for India’s most valuable company, signaling a strong commitment to green energy solutions.

The upcoming solar giga-factory will be a state-of-the-art facility designed to streamline the production of various photovoltaic (PV) components. This includes the manufacturing of PV modules, cells, wafers, ingots, polysilicon, and glass—all essential for converting sunlight into usable electricity.

During the annual shareholders meeting, Ambani highlighted that the factory’s first production line, with a capacity of 20GW for solar PV, is set to commence operations by year-end. This is part of Reliance’s broader strategy to revolutionize energy production.

Looking ahead, Reliance aims to further diversify its renewable energy portfolio. By 2025, the company plans to industrialize sodium-ion cell production at the megawatt scale, with an eye on lithium battery cells in a pilot program set to produce 50 MWh annually starting in 2026.

This development aligns with Reliance’s 2021 commitment to invest $10 billion over three years to bolster its renewable energy infrastructure. The company’s long-term goal is to establish four giga-factories in Jamnagar, Gujarat, dedicated to renewable equipment, battery storage, fuel cells, and hydrogen production, supporting its target of 100 GW of renewable power capacity by 2030.
