QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies SE (EPA) have signed an agreement to jointly develop a 1.25-gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power complex in Iraq, marking a significant step in the region’s renewable energy expansion. The project is part of TotalEnergies’ Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which has been underway since 2021 to promote energy development and sustainability in Iraq.
QatarEnergy announced on Monday that it will acquire a 50% interest in the solar project, pending regulatory approval, while TotalEnergies will retain the other 50%. The solar facility, planned for Iraq’s Basra region, will incorporate 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers. The phased development is set to begin operation between 2025 and 2027 and is expected to supply electricity to around 350,000 homes in the area.
Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy and Qatar’s energy minister, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We look forward to collaborating with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to advance this important initiative for Iraq’s energy sector. We appreciate the Iraqi government’s trust and are committed to supporting Iraq’s solar energy ambitions.”
In addition to this solar project, QatarEnergy holds a 25% stake in the GGIP consortium, which is focused on developing Iraq’s natural resources and flared gas recovery efforts. TotalEnergies leads the consortium with a 45% share, while Iraq’s Basra Oil Company owns the remaining 30%.
