Recurrent Energy, a division of Canadian Solar Inc., a leading global developer and operator of solar and energy storage projects, has announced it has secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) for three of its renewable energy initiatives in the UK, collectively amounting to 120 MWp.
The UK Government, through the Low Carbon Contracts Company, has awarded CfDs for three solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in England: Gateley Moor (49.9 MWp) in Durham, Court Barton (20 MWp) in Devon, and Hessay (49.9 MWp) in York. Recurrent Energy has formally agreed to the contracts after the successful award decision.
These three projects, with a combined capacity of 120 MWp, will generate clean, reliable, and affordable energy for more than 34,000 homes while cutting CO2 emissions by roughly 31,000 tons annually. In addition to supporting the UK’s clean energy goals, the projects will bolster local supply chains, create employment opportunities, and enhance energy security.
The Court Barton solar project is anticipated to begin commercial operations by mid-2025, with Gateley Moor slated for mid-2027 and Hessay expected to come online by mid-2026. The awarded contracts will provide Recurrent Energy with guaranteed revenue for the next 15 years, adjusted for inflation, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing investment in the UKโs renewable energy market.
Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said in a statement, โWe are very pleased with the outcome of the sixth round of Contracts for Difference in the UK. The three projects awarded underscore our strong commitment to the UK, which is one of Recurrent Energyโs key markets. We are proud to be among the key supporters of the UKโs journey towards achieving its net zero emissions targets.โ
The Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, introduced in 2014, was established to aid the UKโs journey towards achieving Net Zero. It serves as a key tool for encouraging investment in renewable energy projects across the country, while ensuring energy costs remain affordable for consumers.
On September 3, 2024, the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero revealed the outcomes of the Sixth Allocation Round (AR6), securing 9.6 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacityโover 2.5 times the amount granted in the previous round (AR5). This achievement is a direct result of the UK government’s decision to boost the CfD auction budget, which now exceeds ยฃ1.5 billion.
