The program uses competitively sourced solar energy to power the system. Customers can subscribe to a portion of this solar energy from Duke Energy’s CEC solar portfolio in 1-kilowatt (kW) increments, which are linked to the program’s solar facilities. The subscription fee is added to the customer’s regular electric bill each month.

Each month, customers receive a subscription credit, which represents their share of the energy produced by the solar centers. This credit is calculated by multiplying their share of energy by the subscription credit rate. After three continuous years of participation, the subscription credit rate starts to increase annually. Customers also enjoy the environmental benefits of renewable energy without owning the solar facilities, helping them meet their own sustainability goals.

The program benefits all customers, and there is no financial impact on non-participating customers. If approved, the program will be available to all current and future Duke Energy customers starting in 2027, when the new solar facilities are expected to be operational. Customers with over 12 months of billing history at their residence can choose a subscription level that matches their usage. Those without 12 months of billing history can start with a 1 kW per month subscription and adjust it once theyโ€™ve had 12 months of billing history.

Customers with a household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or those who can show proof of participation in local, state, or federal assistance programs, may be eligible to join the CEC program, if approved. Income-qualified customers will pay a subscription fee. The bill credit they receive will always be $1/kW more per month than their subscription fee, guaranteeing a net benefit for them. This benefit is funded by other participants in the CEC program, ensuring that non-participating customers do not subsidize the costs.
