The Albanese Government is expanding its push for community-wide electrification projects, aiming to help more Australian households reduce energy costs through rooftop solar, batteries, and energy-efficient appliances.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen has directed the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to explore funding opportunities for additional community electrification demonstration projects nationwide. This initiative seeks to replicate successful models like the Electrify 2515 pilot in Wollongong, which received $5.4 million in ARENA funding in October 2023.

Nationwide Expansion of Electrification Projects

The governmentโ€™s efforts build on ARENAโ€™s broader commitment, having invested over $144 million in 49 projects over the past six years to support household electrification and smart energy solutions.

ARENA is now seeking to expand these initiatives across the ACT, Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania, following earlier projects in South Australia and the Northern Territory. The goal is to trial suburb-wide electrification and collect critical data to optimize future rollouts.

Reducing Energy Bills & Strengthening Energy Security

These projects aim to protect thousands of householdsโ€”including rentersโ€”from power bill spikes by promoting affordable, clean energy solutions such as solar panels, home batteries, and shared community energy storage.

Electrify 2515, currently operating in Austinmer, Clifton, Coledale, Scarborough, Thirroul, and Wombarra, provides participating households with energy-efficient appliances and smart energy management devices to optimize power usage.

Ministerial Directive to ARENA

This is the first time Minister Bowen has exercised his statutory ministerial referral powers to direct ARENA to consider funding specific projects. The decision follows collaborative efforts with senators David Pocock, David Van, Jacqui Lambie, and Lidia Thorpe.

The Albanese Government amended ARENAโ€™s legislation at the end of 2024, officially making electrification a statutory function and restoring its statutory funding, which had previously lapsed.

Minister Chris Bowen on the Electrification Push

Minister Bowen emphasized the importance of accelerating Australiaโ€™s clean energy transition, stating:

โ€œCommunities across Australia are seeing the benefits of the clean energy transformation, and the Albanese Government is delivering the leadership and support they need to grasp those benefits.โ€

He further noted that ARENAโ€™s pilot projects will provide valuable insights into how households can transition to renewable energy and smart systems to reduce costs and emissions.
