Sabah is set to strengthen its position as a regional energy hub with the launch of an RM8.88 billion oil and gas energy hub project at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP). The initiative aims to not only enhance the state’s energy sector but also facilitate a transition towards renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor emphasized that the project will create opportunities for innovation, industrial expansion, and collaboration while ensuring a steady supply of natural gas and lower-carbon fuels. He highlighted the potential for SOGIP to bridge the shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy solutions in Malaysiaโs energy mix.
โBy incorporating renewable energy elements such as solar and wind, SOGIP can play a pivotal role in diversifying the regionโs energy portfolio while strengthening Sabahโs role in the global energy transition,โ Hajiji said during the launch of the project at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today.
The development, a strategic collaboration between Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC), which manages SOGIP, and Gibson Shipbrokers Ltd, will be executed in two phases. The project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art port dedicated to energy transportation and trade activities, reinforcing Sabahโs commitment to sustainable energy investments.
Hajiji reaffirmed the governmentโs focus on local development, citing the Sabah Local Content Council, established through SMJ Energy in May last year, as a key platform for strengthening local expertise in the energy sector. He also stressed that industry stakeholders will be required to invest in training and upskilling Sabahans in renewable energy and sustainable industrial practices.
โAs Malaysia intensifies efforts to integrate renewables into its energy landscape, SOGIPโs expansion will not only bolster economic resilience but also drive sustainable energy growth, particularly in solar and wind power adoption,โ he added.
With strong government and private sector backing, SOGIP is expected to attract further investments in energy infrastructure, including advancements in solar energy and other green technologies, solidifying Sabahโs role in the regionโs transition to cleaner energy.
