Speaking at a Business event, Jaishankar said that as the world’s fifth-largest economy, India must proactively diversify its energy sources. He stressed that energy diplomacy is no longer limited to fossil fuels but now includes strategic investments in renewable energy and emerging technologies like small modular nuclear reactors.

In light of global trends such as industrial policy shifts, rising protectionism, and new trade barriers, Jaishankar underlined that ensuring a favorable energy environment is a core diplomatic goal for India. He pointed to the increasing role of Indian embassies in promoting commercial ties, including facilitating investments in the clean energy sector.

Defending India’s decision to continue oil imports from Russia, he said energy security remains a sovereign priority, regardless of global pressures. He also noted India’s rare diplomatic flexibility, maintaining dialogue with diverse global actors, from Russia and Ukraine to BRICS and QUAD members.
