Andhra Pradesh Accelerates Rooftop Solar Rollout Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme With Focus On SC/ST Inclusion

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is gaining momentum in Andhra Pradesh as the state government steps up efforts to accelerate rooftop solar installations. The initiative aims to provide free electricity to households by promoting the use of solar energy. To ensure faster implementation, Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh has directed power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to speed up the process across the state.

Officials have highlighted that the government is taking a structured approach to ensure the scheme reaches all sections of society. A key focus is on supporting marginalized communities, especially Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) households. According to Special Chief Secretary for Energy K. Vijayanand, the state is adopting a Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model to streamline implementation. This model allows DISCOMs to play a more active role in aggregating demand, coordinating installations, and ensuring efficient execution of rooftop solar systems for eligible consumers.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to make clean energy more accessible while addressing multiple socio-economic goals. By installing rooftop solar systems, households can significantly reduce their monthly electricity expenses. The government believes this will ease the financial burden on families, particularly those from economically weaker sections. At the same time, the shift toward solar energy will contribute to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions, supporting environmental sustainability.

In addition to financial and environmental benefits, the large-scale rollout of rooftop solar systems is expected to boost local employment. The demand for skilled workers in installation, maintenance, and related services is likely to increase, creating new job opportunities within the state. This aligns with the government’s objective of combining clean energy growth with economic development.

The central scheme provides subsidies to residential consumers, making rooftop solar installations more affordable. With Andhra Pradesh now prioritizing its implementation, the state is positioning itself as a key player in India’s renewable energy transition. Officials have emphasized that expanding clean energy capacity is essential for long-term energy security. By involving DISCOMs closely in the process, the government is also ensuring that the power infrastructure is prepared to manage increased solar generation, enabling a more reliable and sustainable energy system for the future.
