Indonesia marked an important step in its clean energy journey on April 21, 2026, with the launch of 1.3 GW of rooftop solar power capacity. This achievement comes through a joint effort between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the state electricity company PLN, and the Indonesian Solar Energy Association. It is seen as the beginning of a much larger plan to build up to 100 GW of solar energy capacity in the coming years.

The growth of rooftop solar in Indonesia has been very fast. In just two years, capacity increased nearly ten times, from 146 MW in 2024 to 1.3 GW in 2026. This progress has been supported by government policies, especially Regulation No. 2 of 2024, which has helped create a more supportive environment for solar energy development. Experts believe rooftop solar is a strong solution because it is affordable, flexible, and easy to install across homes, small businesses, and industries.

The government also sees solar energy as a major economic opportunity. According to officials, the target of 80 to 100 GW of solar capacity could create around 760,000 green jobs. This includes jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and related services. At the same time, increasing solar power will help improve energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and lower carbon emissions. It will also support the growth of local industries and supply chains.

To make it easier for people to adopt solar energy, PLN has introduced a new feature in its mobile application. Through this, customers can apply for rooftop solar systems and track their application process. This step is expected to make the process more transparent and faster, encouraging more users to switch to solar power. The government is also promoting solar installations in rural areas, including near village cooperatives and healthcare centers.

In addition, the Indonesian Solar Energy Association organized the National Solar Transition Forum 2026 on April 21 and 22. The event focused on learning from other countries in the region and discussing ways to achieve the 100 GW target. It also aimed to address key areas such as rooftop solar development, private sector participation, and workforce training.

With 135 members from across the solar industry, the association continues to support the government in reaching its long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2060. The 1.3 GW milestone is expected to boost confidence and attract more investment, helping Indonesia move faster toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
