The Union Government has set a target of covering 75 lakh households under rooftop solar installations by December 2026 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, said on Wednesday.
Speaking at an event marking two years of the scheme, the Minister said the programme has already crossed 40 lakh beneficiary households and is witnessing strong nationwide adoption. He added that the newly introduced Utility-Linked Aggregation (ULA) model is expected to accelerate implementation, particularly among underserved households, with utilities playing a key role in facilitating faster deployment.
The Minister also launched the PM Surya Ghar logo and a WhatsApp-based chatbot to improve user engagement and accessibility.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), around 30 lakh rooftop solar installations have been planned under the ULA model across various states. The scheme has received over 65 lakh applications so far.
Highlighting the rapid scale-up of Indiaโs solar capacity, Shri Joshi noted that growth has accelerated significantly in recent years, with rooftop solar installations rising from about 7,000 per month before the scheme to over three lakh per month currently. He also stated that more than 17 lakh households have achieved zero electricity bills under the initiative.
The Minister further said that over โน22,750 crore in subsidies has been disbursed so far, including โน2,743 crore in May 2026 alone. He emphasised that the scheme is strengthening Indiaโs energy security amid global energy uncertainties.
Launched on 13 February 2024 with an outlay of โน75,021 crore, the PM Surya Ghar scheme has become the worldโs largest domestic rooftop solar programme. It has already registered over one crore households on the national portal and installed more than 33 lakh rooftop solar systems, adding over 12 GW of capacity.
Officials said rooftop solar now accounts for nearly 45% of residential solar capacity, supporting Indiaโs broader target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
During the event, the Minister also felicitated awardees across states, DISCOMs, banks, and vendors for their performance in promoting rooftop solar adoption, and launched two reports by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) focused on household adoption behaviour and maintenance ecosystem development.
Senior officials from the Ministries of New and Renewable Energy, Power, and Finance, along with representatives from financial institutions and state governments, also participated in the event.
