South African energy company Mulilo has achieved financial close for its Hartebeesfontein Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, marking another important step in the country’s efforts to strengthen grid reliability and support the growing integration of renewable energy. The project will be developed near Klerksdorp in the North West Province and will have a capacity of 77 MW and 308 MWh.

The battery storage facility will be located close to Eskom’s Hermes Main Transmission Substation, a strategic location that will allow it to provide essential support to a key electricity transmission corridor in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality. Once operational, the project is expected to play a significant role in improving grid stability and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply.

The Hartebeesfontein project was awarded under Bid Window 2 of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. Mulilo emerged as one of the most successful participants in the bidding round, securing five of the eight projects awarded. The achievement highlights the company’s growing presence in South Africa’s energy storage sector and its commitment to supporting the country’s energy transition goals.

Under a 15-year power purchase agreement, the battery storage facility will provide critical system support and ancillary services to the National Transmission Company of South Africa. These services are expected to help balance electricity supply and demand, while also supporting the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the national grid.

The financial close was made possible through collaboration between several public and private sector stakeholders. Government entities involved in the project include the Department of Electricity and Energy, the Independent Power Producer Office, Eskom, and the National Transmission Company of South Africa. Mulilo worked closely with its development partner, Reatile Group, as well as international investors Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Norfund.

Funding for the project was secured from major South African financial institutions, including Absa, Standard Bank, and Nedbank. Their support demonstrates growing confidence in battery energy storage as a key component of the country’s future energy infrastructure.

Commenting on the milestone, Mulilo Chief Executive Officer Jan Fourie said the project represents a significant contribution to expanding South Africa’s battery storage capacity. He noted that Hartebeesfontein is the company’s fifth project to reach financial close in 2026, reflecting Mulilo’s ability to successfully deliver complex energy projects. Reatile Group Chief Commercial Officer Sunette Smith said the achievement shows how strong collaboration between investors, policymakers, and industry players can accelerate the development of critical energy infrastructure. The project is expected to strengthen the electricity network, reduce pressure on the grid, and support the wider adoption of clean energy across South Africa.
