Eskom has launched Eskom Green, a dedicated renewable energy business aimed at accelerating the development of utility-scale renewable energy projects and supporting the decarbonization of South Africa’s power sector. The new unit will initially operate within Eskom Holdings and is expected to transition into a wholly owned subsidiary subject to the necessary regulatory and governance approvals.
The company said Eskom Green is targeting the delivery of around 6 GW of carbon-free electricity capacity by 2030 through a portfolio of renewable energy and battery storage projects. The initiative includes 17 priority projects located across Eskom’s existing power station sites, leveraging available grid infrastructure to support faster project deployment.
Looking ahead, Eskom Green plans to develop a broader pipeline of up to 32 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2040. The business will seek to attract private and concessional funding through project-level partnerships, supporting South Africa’s energy transition while expanding access to clean electricity for industrial and commercial customers.
