MPA Installs 1,092 Solar PV Panels At Marina South Pier To Advance Singapore’s Clean Energy Goals

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has completed the installation of a solar power generation system at Marina South Pier (MSP), marking another step in its sustainability journey. The milestone also coincides with the 20th anniversary of Marina South Pier, which opened in 2006 to replace Clifford Pier. Today, the pier serves as Singapore’s main passenger ferry terminal for the Southern Islands and supports crew change operations for ships calling at the port.

The new solar installation is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from MPA’s shore-based operations while supporting the Singapore public sector’s renewable energy goals under the GreenGov.SG sustainability movement. As part of the project, 1,092 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels have been installed across approximately 3,200 square metres of rooftop and canopy space at the terminal.

The solar energy system is capable of generating up to 780,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity every year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 180 four-room HDB flats. The renewable energy generated will meet a significant share of the pier’s electricity demand. MPA also plans to progressively upgrade the pier’s electrical systems to maximise the use of clean energy.

In addition to powering the terminal, the solar installation will support the growing charging requirements of electric harbour craft operating from Marina South Pier, helping advance the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner technologies.

The Marina South Pier project forms part of MPA’s wider strategy to expand renewable energy across its shore-based facilities. The authority is also replacing diesel generators on Pulau Satumu with renewable electricity systems and expects the island to operate entirely on renewable power before the end of 2027.
