Nearly one million smart meters have been deployed across Uttar Pradesh using RF mesh technology from Wirepas as part of India’s national smart metering programme. The deployment is being carried out by Polaris Smart Metering and is aimed at supporting grid modernisation across both urban and rural areas of the state.
The smart meters use Wirepas Mesh, which enables meters to communicate with one another and relay data to the utility without requiring a dedicated gateway for every group of meters. The dual-communication solution can also use cellular connectivity where required.
According to the companies, the approach is intended to reduce the infrastructure and connectivity challenges associated with conventional smart-meter deployments, particularly in remote and rural areas where cellular coverage may be limited. As additional meters are installed, they can extend the mesh network’s coverage.
“Uttar Pradesh captures why we do what we do. It is one thing to connect a smart building in a city. It is another to build a network that serves a farming village and an IT hub with the same reliability,” said Teppo Hemiä, CEO of Wirepas.
Polaris has deployed one million smart meters using the dual-communication solution developed in partnership with Wirepas. The companies said the system is designed to meet the service-level requirements of large-scale deployments without relying on dedicated gateways.
Wirepas said its networks can recover quickly following outages, including in remote and challenging terrain. The connectivity is intended to provide utilities with data required for functions such as billing, loss reduction and demand management.
The company also said its technology is currently used to connect more than 11 million smart meters across India, representing around 20% of the country’s smart-meter connectivity market. The platform is compliant with DLMS and IS15959 requirements and can integrate with Head End Systems through standardised APIs.
The deployment forms part of India’s broader smart-metering push under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to improve distribution-sector efficiency, reduce losses and strengthen electricity infrastructure.
