Residents and businesses in LaSalle and Bureau Counties are set to benefit from improved electricity reliability and additional power capacity following regulatory approval of the Illinois Valley Reliability Project, being developed by Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois (ATXI).
The project will involve construction of an approximately 21-mile, 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, upgrades to the existing Princeton substation near Princeton, Illinois, and development of a new switching station near Peru. The switching station will provide greater flexibility in routing electricity through the transmission network, helping maintain reliable service during outages, storms and planned maintenance.
According to ATXI, the additional transmission path is expected to strengthen the regional grid while increasing the amount of electricity available to meet future demand. The added capacity could also support new commercial and industrial development in Princeton, Peru and surrounding communities.
The planned transmission line will generally run east to west. Beginning northeast of Princeton, it will largely parallel Interstate 80 before diverging from the highway, continuing north of Ladd and approaching Peru from the north.
Local officials welcomed the approval, highlighting the project’s potential reliability and economic benefits. Princeton officials said the infrastructure could enhance electricity reliability while supporting economic opportunities in the city and surrounding region. Peru officials similarly noted that the additional transmission capacity could help strengthen the area’s electricity infrastructure and enable future development.
The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA) also welcomed the Illinois Commerce Commission’s approval, saying the project would improve electric reliability for its member communities of Peru and Princeton while creating additional opportunities for economic growth.
Before submitting its proposed routes to the Illinois Commerce Commission, the project team conducted three rounds of in-person and virtual public open houses in August, September and November 2025. ATXI said community feedback gathered during the consultation process was reviewed and considered in developing the primary and alternate transmission routes filed with regulators.
ATXI plans to engage local contractors and union workers during construction, aiming to retain employment and other economic benefits within nearby communities.
The Illinois Valley Reliability Project forms part of broader efforts to reinforce regional transmission infrastructure and prepare the electricity system for growing demand and future energy needs.
