Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has been declared the successful bidder under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process to establish an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project. The project, titled “Common Transmission System for evacuation of power from Lakadia (Phase-II: 7.5GW), Jam Khambhaliya (Phase-II: 5.5GW) and Jamnagar (Phase-I: 1GW) – Part-C,” will be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis.
POWERGRID secured the transmission project by quoting annual transmission charges of ₹430.67 crore. The company received the Letter of Intent (LoI) for the project on September 25, 2026.
The company disclosed the development to the National Stock Exchange of India Limited and BSE Limited on September 26, 2026. The disclosure was made by Anjana Luthra, Company Secretary and Compliance Officer, in accordance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
As part of the project scope, POWERGRID will establish a new 765/400/220 kV Alephata Sub-station in Maharashtra. The development will also include the construction of 765 kV and 400 kV transmission lines across the state. Associated transmission infrastructure, including equipment and bays, will form part of the project.
The transmission system is designed to support the evacuation of power from major renewable energy development zones in Gujarat, including Lakadia, Jam Khambhaliya and Jamnagar. The broader transmission network is being developed in phases to facilitate the integration and transfer of large-scale generation capacity into the national grid.
The latest award further strengthens POWERGRID’s position in the competitive transmission sector. With this project, the company has secured nine transmission system projects through the TBCB route during financial year 2026–27 so far.
According to the company’s disclosure, the nine projects together represent cumulative annual transmission charges of ₹7,664.08 crore. The latest project contributes ₹430.67 crore to this cumulative figure.
The award comes as India continues to expand its transmission infrastructure to accommodate rising electricity demand and the growing addition of renewable energy capacity. Large transmission projects are increasingly important for connecting generation centres, particularly renewable energy-rich regions, with demand centres across different states.
Under the BOOT model, POWERGRID will be responsible for developing, owning and operating the transmission assets before transferring them in accordance with the applicable project framework. The project will add to the company’s portfolio of competitively bid transmission assets and expand its transmission infrastructure footprint in Maharashtra.
