Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister, said Thursday that the oil and gas sector will be the main driver of the growth in green hydrogen. This is because industry players will produce and use the clean energy source for multiple uses.
Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that OMCs (oil marketing companies) were directed to create a plan for green hydrogen. He said it would be submitted to Prime Minister’s Office as soon as possible.
The remarks were made by the minister while addressing reporters at the ’11th CII Bio-Energy Summit,’ which took place in the capital.
He stated, “I have always believed that green hydrogen’s success will be in the petroleum and natural gas sector (PNG), for a variety reasons like there are refineries that will produce and consume green hydrogen for a variety PNG functions.”
The Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4th with an outlay Rs 19,744 crore. This mission will make India a global center for the production of this clean source of energy.
This mission aims to encourage the development of green hydrogen production capacities of at least 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) per year with associated renewable energy capacity additions of approximately 125 GW by 2030.
Puri also stated that he had called an OMCs meeting to discuss the development of a roadmap for green hydrogen production.
He further stated that all of them want to make the transition to green hydrogen in a comprehensive manner, but did not name any companies.
