In a recent announcement at the ENLIT ASIA 2023 conference, TNB’s President and CEO, Dato’ Seri Ir. Baharin Din reiterates TNB’s commitment to sustainable development initiatives in ASEAN. TNB aims to accelerate a responsible Energy Transition (ET) while addressing the energy trilemma, emphasizing the need for energy security, sustainability, and affordability.
Baharin highlighted the goal to source 3,000 GW of capacity from clean energy within the ASEAN region. Currently, ASEAN has 95GW of thermal fuel and 188GW of renewable energy (RE). By 2050, the region aims to reach over 2,700 GW of RE. He emphasized the crucial role of policy, green technology, and funding in achieving a successful ET.
Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) focuses on RE, energy efficiency, hydrogen, bioenergy, green mobility, and carbon capture. Baharin stressed the transformative role of these initiatives in transitioning Malaysia towards a sustainable, green economy.
Strategic partnerships with regional counterparts through platforms like HAPUA, SOME, and AMEM have expedited progress towards sustainable energy objectives. Malaysia is actively strengthening its transmission infrastructure to support regional cooperation and the interconnection of energy systems across borders through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). TNB has signed 29 MoUs with local and international partners to advance Malaysia’s ET goals, covering fields such as solar parks, hydrogen integration, interconnection, and electric vehicles.
Baharin believes that a collaborative approach, supported by policies, technology advancements, and adequate funding, is crucial for a successful ET while addressing the energy trilemma.
