During the ongoing 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, Saudi-based ACWA Power, recognized as the world’s largest private water desalination company and a trailblazer in the energy transition, unveiled plans to embark on Indonesia’s most expansive green hydrogen venture.
In collaboration with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity provider, and PT Pupuk Indonesia, a state-owned chemical and fertilizer producer, ACWA Power CEO Marco Arcelli sealed the agreement. The initiative aims to establish Indonesia’s significant green hydrogen facility named Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project.
Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, expressed enthusiasm about deepening ties with Indonesia’s government entities, affirming the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable progress for a greener future.
Expected to commence commercial operations in 2026, the GH2 Project will rely on 600MW of solar and wind power, producing an estimated 150,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. This groundbreaking project is anticipated to cost over $1 billion.
The engineering procurement and construction (EPC) bidding process for the GH2 Project is scheduled to initiate in early 2024, with financial closure expected by the end of 2025.
ACWA Power continues to expand its green hydrogen portfolio, concurrently progressing with the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia and launching a second venture in Uzbekistan. These initiatives align with the company’s dedication to embracing green hydrogen as a pivotal component in the global energy transition.
Darmawan Prasodjo, CEO of PLN, highlighted the pivotal role of green hydrogen in accelerating energy transition, emphasizing the joint commitment among the government, PLN, Pupuk Indonesia, and ACWA Power to foster development in this arena.
Rahmad Pribadi, President Director of Pupuk Indonesia, underscored the collaborative effort’s significance, noting its potential not only for environmental enhancement but also for stimulating Indonesia’s future economic growth.
ACWA Power’s involvement in Indonesia extends further, having secured contracts for the development of two floating offshore solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in October 2022, solidifying its commitment to sustainable energy solutions within the region.
