In a significant move, the Tamil Nadu government has given the green light to restructure the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), paving the way for the creation of a new green energy entity. Tangedco will be bifurcated into two separate corporations โ€“ the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TNPGC) and the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDC). While TNPGC will oversee fossil fuel-based thermal power plants, both existing and under construction, TNPDC will manage electricity distribution, encompassing power procurement, metering, billing, and customer support.

Simultaneously, the state is set to bolster its commitment to renewable energy with the establishment of the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGEC). This entity results from the merger of Tangedco’s renewable energy wing with the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Authority (TEDA). TNGEC will be responsible for the ownership, operation, and maintenance of existing and upcoming assets related to hydro generation, pumped hydro, and all clean and renewable energy projects.

The decision to restructure Tangedco and create a dedicated green energy company is based on recommendations from a private consultant who assessed the utility’s financial viability last August. Recognizing the evolving landscape of the power sector, the government aims to align with clean energy transitions and maximize value while minimizing environmental impact. The new corporations are expected to be formed within the current financial year, functioning as wholly-owned subsidiaries of TNEB Ltd. Tamil Nadu’s move follows the footsteps of states like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra in consolidating distribution under a single company.
