Edison and Chiron Energy have recently signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) aimed at constructing five photovoltaic plants in Northern Italy, spanning across Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Veneto regions.
According to Fabio Dubini, Executive Vice President of Gas & Power Portfolio Management & Optimization at Edison, the agreement will last up to 10 years. Edison will purchase all the renewable energy produced, totaling approximately 50 GWh per year, to provide to its customers.
Chiron Energy will oversee the creation, construction, and subsequent operational management of the plants, which are set to commence operation in the first half of the upcoming year.
This recent collaboration follows a previous PPA signed by the two companies in 2022, resulting in the construction of eight photovoltaic plants in Piedmont and Veneto. These plants currently produce an average of 45 GWh per year.
Fabio Dubini expressed Edison’s commitment to fostering the development of renewable energy and contributing to Italy’s energy transition and decarbonization efforts. Edison has set an ambitious growth plan to increase the renewable share to 40% of the production mix by 2030, with PPAs playing a crucial role in achieving this goal.
Regarding the Agriculture Legislative Decree, Edison, like other operators, has concerns about measures that restrict suitable areas for new photovoltaic systems. Such measures could potentially delay the achievement of the 2030 objectives outlined for renewable energy expansion.
