A specialized team from Jordan, led by Engineer Yacoub Marrar, Director of the Renewable Energy Directorate at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, recently visited the Netherlands and Belgium to study the latest advancements in green hydrogen production. The trip aimed to enhance Jordan’s capabilities in this emerging sector and explore potential manufacturing opportunities within the country.
During the visit, Marrar met with hydrogen industry specialists in both countries, where he presented an overview of Jordan’s potential in green hydrogen production. The discussions focused on the opportunities and challenges faced by Jordan as it ventures into this new industry.
The Jordanian delegation, which included key representatives such as Yara Akash, Director of Legal Affairs, and Engineer Haneen Ahmed from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, conducted field visits to hydrogen export ports and technology testing centers. These visits provided insights into the state-of-the-art practices and technologies used in green hydrogen manufacturing.
The team comprised members from various government agencies, including the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Energy and Minerals Sector Regulatory Authority, the National Electricity Company, the Aqaba Development Company, and the Jordanian Oil Facilities Logistics Company (GOTC).
One of the key highlights of the tour was the visit to the Dutch port of Rotterdam, a major European hub for green hydrogen import and export. The port’s role in facilitating the green hydrogen supply chain underscored the strategic importance of such infrastructure in achieving carbon neutrality and enhancing energy sustainability.
This initiative was coordinated by the World Bank in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation’s Economic Reforms Implementation Support Unit, with support from the Multi-Donor Trust Fund in Jordan. The collaboration aimed to foster knowledge exchange and strengthen Jordan’s efforts in developing a robust green hydrogen industry.
The visit marks a significant step for Jordan as it seeks to integrate green hydrogen into its renewable energy portfolio, contributing to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
