Q ENERGY has commenced construction of a new photovoltaic (PV) plant in the province of Teruel, further expanding its footprint in the north of Spain. The project will feature more than 75,000 PV modules, each optimally aligned to the sun using advanced tracking systems to maximize efficiency.
Once operational, the solar power plant will generate enough carbon-free electricity to meet the annual consumption needs of approximately 23,000 Spanish households. The plant’s operations are expected to prevent around 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, contributing significantly to climate protection. Completion of the project is scheduled for summer 2026.
The PV plant will be constructed across a 92-hectare area located near Samper de Calanda and Híjar. Beyond generating clean energy, Q ENERGY is taking a comprehensive environmental approach to the project. Special measures will be implemented to support local biodiversity, including modifications to perimeter fencing to allow small animals to move freely across the site. Additional protective features will be installed to prevent bird collisions and electrocutions, enhancing the site’s safety for local wildlife. A green belt comprising hedges and other plants will also be established around the facility to further enrich the surrounding ecosystem.
Eduardo de la Hera, Head of Development at Q ENERGY Iberia, stated “This is already the fifth Spanish project for which we can announce the start of construction this year, and there will be more to come in the months ahead, also here in Aragon. Wherever possible, we will involve local companies to support the regional economy.”
In parallel with the construction, nearby compensation areas will be tailored to meet the specific needs of steppe bird species, ensuring their habitats are preserved and enhanced. On the project site itself, efforts will be focused on supporting the reintroduction of the lesser kestrel, a bird species native to the region.
This will involve installing new nesting boxes and restoring traditional field huts, which serve as preferred shelters and breeding grounds for the kestrels, thereby creating ideal conditions for their habitation and population recovery. Through this project, Q ENERGY not only aims to contribute to Spain’s renewable energy goals but also demonstrates its commitment to integrating sustainable energy development with proactive environmental stewardship.
