Consumers Energy has officially started construction on its new Blackman Solar Gardens project, following a groundbreaking event attended by local officials, company representatives, and its construction partner, Kokosing. The project is expected to begin producing solar power by the end of this year. Blackman Solar will expand Consumers Energyโ€™s Solar Gardens program โ€” a community solar initiative that lets customers support clean energy generation without installing solar panels on their own property. It offers a simple and affordable way for people to reduce their carbon footprint and support a cleaner Michigan for future generations.

“Consumers Energy is committed to reliably and affordably powering Michigan’s homes and businesses. In addition to its environmental benefits, renewable energy is increasingly cost competitive and provides flexibility to respond to emerging needs, adapt to changing conditions and embrace innovative technology. By participating in these programs, customers can save money and contribute to a greener Michigan,” commented David Hicks. Consumers Energy’s vice president of clean energy development.

This new facility will be Consumers Energyโ€™s fourth Solar Gardens site, joining existing projects in Cadillac, Western Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University. Blackman Solar will feature around 5,000 solar panels and generate enough electricity to serve about 2,500 customers. Consumers Energy, Michiganโ€™s largest energy provider, supplies electricity and/or natural gas to 6.8 million residents across all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula. The company remains committed to delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy every day.
