Nextracker, a global provider of advanced solar tracking systems, has announced that its NX Horizonโข solar trackers will be used in one of Europeโs largest solar power installationsโthe 550 MW Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar PV park in Western Macedonia, Greece. The project is owned by PPC Renewables (PPCR), a subsidiary of the PPC Group, and was developed by EPC company Terna SA. Built on the reclaimed land of a former coal mine, the solar park is designed to produce clean, affordable energy and is currently in the final phase of construction.
Once fully operational, the Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida project will be the largest standalone solar plant in Greece and is expected to supply around 1.8% of the country’s total annual electricity needs. The project reflects a broader shift in Europe toward clean energy and supports Greeceโs updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which sets a target of 82% renewable energy in electricity generation by 2030โup from the previous target of 66% set in 2019.
Large-scale renewable energy projects like this play a vital role in helping the European Union achieve its long-term goals of energy independence and net-zero emissions by 2050. Beyond environmental benefits, the solar park is also expected to contribute to regional economic development by creating jobs and revitalizing areas previously dependent on fossil fuel industries.
Howard Wenger, president, Nextracker, said in a statement, โThe 550 MW Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar project is an important step to increase energy independence in Europe and derisk capacity shortages for the region. We are honored to partner with leaders like Terna SA and Greeceโs utility PPC who are operating at the highest European standards for executing large-scale utility solar projects. This landmark project reinforces our culture of serving our customers with world class technology, backed by our talented European team and a robust supply chain ecosystem.โ
Nextracker, which has shipped over 130 GW of solar trackers globally, has emerged as the market leader in Europe, according to a recent report by Wood Mackenzie. To support its growing presence, the company has expanded its European operations and strengthened its network of local manufacturing partners. This enables Nextracker to meet the logistical and scheduling demands of large-scale utility and distributed-generation (DG) projects while ensuring timely equipment delivery across the continent.
