Waaree ESS Commences 5.15 GWh Battery Energy Storage Container Manufacturing Facility in India

Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (Waaree ESS), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited, has commenced operations at its 5.15 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility, marking a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to build an integrated energy storage manufacturing ecosystem in India.

The facility, which has been expanded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh to 5.15 GWh, incorporates advanced Industry 4.0 technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance infrastructure. It is designed to manufacture utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) battery energy storage containers.

According to the company, the increase in manufacturing capacity was enabled through production process optimization and improvements in battery cell energy density.

The BESS container facility represents the first phase of Waaree ESS’s planned 20 GWh integrated energy storage manufacturing roadmap. During the current financial year, the company also plans to operationalize a 5.15 GWh battery pack manufacturing facility and a 3.5 GWh lithium cell manufacturing facility, creating a fully integrated domestic battery manufacturing value chain.

Waaree said the combined facilities are expected to strengthen India’s energy storage ecosystem, support the country’s renewable energy expansion, and reduce dependence on imported battery technologies.

The company noted that battery energy storage systems are becoming increasingly important as India expands its solar and wind energy capacity. By storing excess renewable electricity and supplying it during periods of peak demand, BESS solutions help improve grid stability, reduce renewable energy curtailment, and enhance energy security.

Through the integrated production of lithium cells, battery packs, and BESS containers, Waaree ESS aims to offer locally manufactured energy storage solutions while supporting the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Commenting on the development, Sunil Rathi, Director at Waaree, said battery energy storage systems will play a central role in India’s clean energy transition by supporting grid reliability, energy security, and sustainable growth. He added that the new manufacturing facility, along with the planned lithium cell and battery pack production lines, will strengthen Waaree ESS’s ability to deliver domestically manufactured energy storage solutions and contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global clean energy manufacturing hub.
