UltraTech Crosses 2 GW Green Energy Capacity For Captive Use

UltraTech Cement has become the first cement company in India to commission more than 2 GW of green energy capacity for captive use. The company has reached a cumulative installed green energy capacity of 2,024 MW, strengthening its focus on renewable power, waste heat recovery and energy security.

UltraTech has commissioned 116.55 MW of wind capacity as part of its Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind-solar hybrid project in Barmer, Rajasthan. It has also commissioned 10 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) capacity at Sarlanagar Cement Works, its integrated manufacturing unit in Karnataka.

The company’s total green energy portfolio now comprises 1,580 MW of renewable energy capacity and 444 MW of WHRS capacity. Together, these sources meet around 48% of UltraTech’s current power requirements.

The milestone comes as the cement manufacturer continues to implement a multi-pronged energy transition strategy across its operations. During FY27 so far, nearly one-third of UltraTech’s 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilisation above 50% of their electricity requirements. Five manufacturing units have recorded green energy utilisation of more than 95%.

UltraTech commissioned 430 MW of green energy capacity during FY26 and is continuing to expand its renewable energy and WHRS portfolio. The company is also progressively deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to improve renewable energy utilisation and enhance power supply reliability.

In 2025, UltraTech operationalised India’s first on-site hybrid round-the-clock renewable energy project at its Sewagram Cement Works in Gujarat. The project combines solar, wind and battery storage to provide a more reliable renewable power supply for manufacturing operations.

The company has also stated that it has not invested in new captive thermal power capacity for more than ten years, including for greenfield projects and brownfield expansions at its integrated units. This strategy is aimed at reducing dependence on conventional grid power and fossil fuel-based electricity while limiting exposure to coal and power price volatility.

UltraTech said its green energy expansion is supporting greater energy security across its manufacturing footprint while contributing to India’s broader energy transition.

The company aims to increase the share of green energy in its total power mix to 85% by 2030. Separately, as a member of RE100, UltraTech has committed to meeting 100% of its electricity requirements through renewable sources by 2050.
