The Arsenal solar power plant, recently inaugurated in Mauritius, marks a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy efforts. Developed by the French company GreenYellow, the 14 MWp plant signifies a shift towards sustainability. Minister Georges Pierre Lesjongard, alongside other officials, attended the launch, highlighting its importance in Mauritius’ energy landscape.

With its 15-hectare expanse, the plant is expected to contribute 14 MWp of clean energy to Mauritius’ power grid, generating approximately 20 GWh annually, enough to power 4,500 homes. Minister Lesjongard sees the plant as a crucial step towards achieving the nation’s renewable energy targets of 35% by 2025 and 60% by 2030.

Given that a significant portion of Mauritius’ energy comes from thermal power stations fueled by oil and coal, initiatives like the Arsenal plant are vital for decarbonization efforts. Local entities, such as the Commercial Bank of Mauritius (MCB), have played a role in financing the project, investing 350 million Mauritian rupees.

The momentum towards renewable energy continues, with plans for the construction of four “Stor’Sun (SS)” solar power plants by the CEB in collaboration with the French company Qair. These plants, with a combined capacity of 60 MWp and incorporating battery-based storage systems, represent a $151 million investment in Mauritius’ sustainable future.
