Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has set an ambitious target for its Kariega plant to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, aligning with the global priorities of the Volkswagen brand. This goal underscores VWSA’s commitment to environmental sustainability through a range of initiatives at its Kariega, Sandton, and Centurion sites.

Under the Zero Impact Factory programme, VWSA focuses on biodiversity, clean energy, efficient resource management, and waste reduction. A significant step in this direction includes the installation of solar photovoltaic panels at its facilities, which generate 4,488 MWh of electricity annually, with an investment of R34 million so far. Further investments are planned, including an additional R55 million for solar panels at the Kariega plant’s employee car park, which will add another 4,500 MWh of capacity starting September 2024.

VWSA’s waste reduction efforts have also been noteworthy, achieving a 5% reduction in landfill waste in 2023. The company has decreased its cardboard box waste by 17 tonnes and plastic waste by 46 tonnes between 2022 and 2023. Additionally, VWSA promotes biodiversity through projects such as planting spekboom and removing invasive alien plant species at its Kariega sites.

These initiatives have led to a significant reduction in VWSA’s environmental impact, cutting it by 57% compared to 2010 levels. Specific reductions include:

  • 56% in energy usage
  • 53% in CO₂ emissions
  • 73% in freshwater use
  • 76% in waste generation

In recognition of its sustainability efforts, VWSA received the international Lean & Green Management Award and the SJM Flex Environmental Award at the local Exporter of the Year awards in 2023.

“With these results, VWSA is synonymous with environmental sustainability,” said Ulrich Schwabe, VWSA Production Director. “We remain committed to minimizing our environmental impact across all aspects of our operations. I am grateful to every employee who has contributed to these achievements. As VWSA, we will continue building on the good work that has already been done by our teams and pave the way to our carbon-neutral future.”

This ongoing commitment highlights VWSA’s role in driving sustainable practices within the automotive industry and its dedication to a greener future.
