Swedish thin-film solar panel manufacturer Midsummer has entered the Thai renewable energy sector by signing a distribution agreement with Eco On, formerly known as Gold Stone Energy Thailand. The partnership aims to introduce Midsummer’s lightweight and flexible solar panels to the Thai market, enhancing the country’s solar infrastructure.

This collaboration is a key component of Midsummer’s broader strategy to expand in Thailand, which includes plans for a 200MW solar plant in partnership with a local consortium.

Eco On is a well-established provider of solar rooftop and solar carport solutions in Thailand. The company specializes in offering comprehensive solar energy solutions, including rooftop installations, ground-mounted systems, and solar carports. It has formed strong partnerships with major energy corporations and conglomerates, positioning itself as a key player in Thailand’s growing renewable energy landscape.

Under the agreement, Eco On will take charge of distributing and installing Midsummer’s solar panels across Thailand, focusing on commercial and industrial applications. The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of thin-film solar technology in the country, particularly in areas where traditional, heavier panels are not suitable.

Eco On co-founder and managing director Ariya Sawangsri highlighted the advantages of Midsummer’s technology, stating, “We are delighted to collaborate with Midsummer to offer our clients cutting-edge solar solutions with great functionality that address some of the major weaknesses in existing roofs within Thailand.”

Sawangsri pointed out that Midsummer’s lightweight panels, particularly the BOLD series, which weighs only 3kg/m², are ideal for low load-bearing flat roofs commonly found in commercial and industrial buildings. Additionally, he noted that there is significant potential for these panels in offshore floating solar applications, a sector that is gaining momentum in Southeast Asia.

Midsummer CEO Eric Jaremalm underscored the strategic importance of Thailand in the company’s expansion efforts. “Thailand is a very interesting market for us and one that can benefit greatly by rolling out thin and lightweight solar roofs on its many buildings that are often basking in the sun but with roofs that are too weak for heavy silicon solar panels,” he said.

Jaremalm also expressed optimism about future growth opportunities, stating that the company looks forward to entering this emerging market alongside Eco On and, eventually, exploring the possibility of manufacturing its panels locally in Thailand.

With this partnership, Midsummer strengthens its position in the Southeast Asian renewable energy sector, bringing innovative solar solutions to a market with increasing demand for sustainable energy alternatives.
