The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has announced the organization of a national-level workshop to promote awareness about the importance of energy storage systems in supporting renewable energy integration into the power grid. This workshop will be conducted in multiple phases, and the first phase is scheduled for May 2, 2025. It will take place in hybrid mode, allowing participants to join virtually. All interested officials of CEA have been invited to participate in the event, and the meeting link will be shared in due course.

The workshop aims to bring together key stakeholders including distribution companies (DISCOMs), solar energy companies, and battery energy storage system (BESS) providers. It will begin with registration followed by a welcome address by the Chairperson of CEA and an opening by the Chief Engineer of the Energy Storage System Division.

The first session will focus on how renewable energy and energy storage systems can help tackle climate change and will include a discussion on the related policy framework by CEA. This will be followed by a session on pumped storage projects, also presented by CEA, which will highlight their relevance in storing renewable energy. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will then present insights on the future prospects of renewable energy in India. CEA will also speak on the integration of renewable energy with storage, covering aspects like rooftop solar and decentralized renewable energy systems.

Post-lunch, the session will feature real-world learnings from operational projects. These include a solar and BESS plant in Lakshadweep by SECI and LEDA, and another 10 MW/10 MWh BESS project by TPDDL in Delhi. Additional case studies will be shared from BRPLโ€™s under-construction BESS plant in Delhi and a solar+BESS plant in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh.

The workshop will also cover a technical and commercial study on replacing diesel generators with battery systems at the Sewa Bhawan Building, led by CEA and IIT Roorkee. After that, companies like Ampere Hour, Replus, and Newen System will showcase modular battery systems designed to replace diesel generators.

In the final session, SECI will share updates on recent solar and BESS tenders, especially focusing on the prices discovered during the bidding process. The event will conclude with remarks from the Member (Planning), CEA, followed by tea and snacks.

This workshop reflects CEAโ€™s commitment to advancing Indiaโ€™s clean energy goals through better integration of renewable energy using advanced storage solutions.
