More than 26 lakh households across India have benefitted under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), with over 20.85 lakh rooftop solar (RTS) systems installed since the launch of the scheme in February 2024, the government informed Parliament.
As of December 31, 2025, the Centre has disbursed ₹14,771.82 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to support residential rooftop solar adoption, according to data shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
Strong Nationwide Adoption
PM Surya Ghar is a demand-driven scheme, enabling all residential electricity consumers with grid connections to apply for rooftop solar installations through the National Portal. The scheme aims to reduce household electricity bills, promote clean energy adoption, and strengthen India’s distributed renewable energy base.
Since its inception, 20,85,514 RTS systems have been installed, benefitting 26,14,446 households nationwide.
Gujarat, Maharashtra Lead Installations
Gujarat emerged as the top-performing state, with 5.15 lakh installations, benefitting 7.42 lakh households and receiving ₹3,845.60 crore in CFA. Maharashtra followed closely with 3.92 lakh installations, benefitting 6.35 lakh households and receiving ₹2,787.59 crore.
Other leading states include:
-Uttar Pradesh: 3.26 lakh installations | ₹2,234.63 crore CFA
-Kerala: 1.77 lakh installations | ₹1,275.36 crore CFA
-Rajasthan: 1.19 lakh installations | ₹823.12 crore CFA
-Andhra Pradesh: 84,618 installations | ₹562.14 crore CFA
-Madhya Pradesh: 83,665 installations | ₹601 crore CFA
-Tamil Nadu: 51,227 installations | ₹353.34 crore CFA
Climate and Energy Impact
Under the scheme, rooftop solar deployment across one crore households is projected to generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity, leading to a reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifetime of the installed systems.
Expanding Distributed Solar Footprint
The rapid scale-up of rooftop solar under PMSG: MBY reflects growing public participation in India’s clean energy transition. States and Union Territories across the country have recorded installations, extending the scheme’s benefits to urban, semi-urban, and rural households.
The government expects continued momentum under the programme, positioning rooftop solar as a key pillar in India’s energy transition, emissions reduction strategy, and household energy cost savings agenda.
