E.ON has become the first energy company in Germany to reach the significant milestone of installing one million smart meters. The one-millionth intelligent metering system was installed by LEW Verteilnetz (LVN), a regional E.ON subsidiary, at a customer location near Augsburg. This achievement reinforces E.ON’s position as a leader in the nationwide smart meter rollout and in the broader digitalization of Germany’s power distribution grid.

By the end of 2025, E.ON is expected to achieve an average rollout rate of around 30 percent, placing the company among the top performers in the mandatory installation program. Nearly half of all smart meters in Germany are already located within E.ON grid regions, despite the company being responsible for only one in four metering points. Looking ahead, E.ON plans to install around 500,000 additional intelligent metering systems every year.

Thomas König, Member of the E.ON Board of Management responsible for Energy Networks, highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating that the company continues to deliver even in complex regulatory and technical conditions.

He emphasized that one million smart meters represent a clear signal for the future, noting that E.ON will focus on rollout areas where smart meters deliver the most value, such as heat pumps, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, battery storage, photovoltaic systems and other flexible energy consumers. However, he also stressed that the national rollout process in Germany must be simplified and accelerated for the benefit of both the grid and customers.

Smart meters play a crucial role in the energy transition. These intelligent devices provide grid operators with real-time data on the status of the distribution network, enabling more efficient control, improved reliability, and a more stable energy supply. For customers, smart meters open the door to active participation in the energy transition through tools such as flexible electricity tariffs and better oversight of their energy consumption.Germany still lags behind other European countries in smart meter deployment.

With only 3.8 percent of metering points equipped with intelligent systems, the country is far below the European average of more than 60 percent. By comparison, countries like Sweden—where E.ON has also helped drive smart meter adoption—have already completed nearly nationwide installations of second-generation smart meters.

A successful and accelerated rollout in Germany is essential to unlock the full benefits for grid stability, customer engagement and the overall success of the energy transition. E.ON remains strongly committed to advancing the rollout and supporting the transformation of the energy system in the years ahead.
