The new storage facility will have a capacity of 196MW/980MWh, allowing it to supply 196MW of renewable electricity continuously for up to five hours. Commercial operations are expected to begin by the end of 2027.The project follows the company’s earlier announcement of a 1GWh battery storage system at the Malgarida solar complex, a 238MWp photovoltaic facility that is currently under construction.

With the addition of the new El Romero storage project, ACCIONA Energía will double its planned battery energy storage capacity in Chile to a total of 2GWh.These large-scale storage systems are expected to enhance the integration of renewable energy into the grid by storing excess solar power and making it available when demand is higher.

They will also help improve grid stability, optimize energy management, and strengthen the reliability of electricity supply across the country.ACCIONA Energía currently operates 922MW of renewable energy capacity in Chile.

Its portfolio includes three wind farms—Punta Palmeras (45MW), San Gabriel (183MW), and Tolpán Sur (84MW)—as well as four solar power plants: El Romero (246MWp), Malgarida (238MWp), Usya (64MWp), and Almeyda (62MWp). The latest investment highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure in Chile.
